Thread BreakingUpdated a month ago
If your thread keeps breaking or shredding while sewing, it’s frustrating, but usually easy to fix. Follow these steps to troubleshoot and get back to smooth stitching.
1. Check the Thread Type and Quality
Use the right thread for your fabric.
- Make sure you’re using thread suited to your project, cotton for cotton fabric and polyester for most other fabrics.
- Avoid cheap, low-quality threads as they are prone to breakage.
- Check that you are not using hand sewing thread, as this is often pre-waxed and not suitable for machine sewing.
- Specialty threads like metallic and invisible threads can be prone to breaking.
2. Check the Needle
Is the needle correct for your fabric and thread?
- Use a needle sized appropriately for your thread and fabric. Heavy fabrics need larger needles.
- If you are not sure which type of needle to use, download a useful free guide here.
- Replace bent, dull, or damaged needles. Insert with the flat side facing the right direction.
3. Rethread the Machine
Is the machine threaded properly?
- Re-thread both the top and bobbin threads carefully.
- Make sure the upper thread passes through all tension discs and the take-up lever.
- Check bobbin winding and insertion.
4. Check for Thread Catching or Snags
Is the thread running smoothly?
- Look for tangles, knots or snags on the spool or guides.
- Ensure the thread sits properly on the spool holder to prevent tension issues.
- Use the correct size spool cap, if required for your machine
5. Inspect for Burrs on the Needle Plate
Is the needle plate smooth?
- Tiny burrs can form over time and shred thread.
- Check for rough spots, especially near the needle hole. Smooth burrs gently with a fine file or seek professional help.
6. Clean the Machine
Is lint or debris causing problems?
- Clean around the bobbin case, tension discs and feed dogs with a brush or tweezers.
- Remove all lint that may interfere with thread movement.
7. Check the Sewing Speed
Are you sewing too fast?
- High speed, especially on thick fabric or thread, can cause thread breakage.
- Slow down for better control and less thread stress.
8. Check the Thread Tension
Is the tension balanced?
- Too tight causes breakage; too loose leads to uneven stitches.
- Test on scrap fabric and adjust tension gradually for the best stitch.
9. Check the Bobbin Case and Bobbin
Is the bobbin wound and inserted correctly?
- Uneven winding or wrong insertion can cause shredding.
- Check that you are using the correct bobbin for your machine.
Final Step: Test on Scrap Fabric
Always test after adjustments.
Sew a few lines on scrap fabric to make sure the thread no longer breaks or shreds.
By following these steps, you’ll stop thread breakage and get back to confident, smooth sewing!
