Fabric get sucked into machineUpdated a month ago

If your fabric is getting sucked into the machine while you sew, it can be a big headache, but don’t worry, most of the time it’s an easy fix. Follow these steps to troubleshoot and stop your fabric from getting pulled in.

1. Ensure Fabric Covers All Feed Dogs

Are you sewing close to the fabric’s edge?

  • Make sure the fabric feeds evenly across all the feed dogs, not just the edge.
  • Adjust needle position if you’re sewing narrow hems, so that the fabric is still on the feed dogs.

2. Adjust Presser Foot Pressure

Is your presser foot pressure too high?

  • Too much pressure can cause fabric to be pushed unevenly or caught in the feed dogs, leading to it getting sucked in.
  • Reduce the pressure (if your machine has the option) or try a different presser foot.

3. Handle Thin or Slippery Fabrics Carefully

Is your fabric thin or slippery?

  • These fabrics tend to get pulled unevenly or sucked into the machine.
  • Use stabilisers or tissue paper underneath for extra grip.

4. Use a Walking Foot for Problem Fabrics

Are you sewing slippery, knit or thick fabrics?

  • A walking foot helps feed fabric evenly and prevents it from being sucked into the machine.
  • Consider using one for better control.

5. Clean the Feed Dogs

Are the feed dogs clean and free to move?

  • Lint and fabric bits can block the feed dogs from gripping your fabric.
  • Use a small brush to remove any debris around the feed dogs.

6. Check Fabric Alignment

Is your fabric lying flat and straight?

  • Make sure your fabric is properly positioned and flat before you start sewing.
  • Gently guide it with your hands, don’t pull or push, so the machine can feed it evenly.

Final Step: Test on Scrap Fabric

Before you start your real project, sew a few test stitches on scrap fabric.

Make sure the fabric feeds evenly and nothing gets pulled into the machine.

By following these steps, you’ll stop your fabric from getting sucked into the machine and keep your sewing smooth and frustration-free!
