Fabric not feedingUpdated a month ago

When your fabric won’t feed through the machine, it’s a major headache. But don’t worry, most times it’s a quick fix. Follow these steps to troubleshoot and get your fabric gliding smoothly under the needle again.

1. Check the Feed Dogs

Are they raised and ready to feed?

  • The feed dogs must be up and visible to pull your fabric through
  • If you accidentally lowered them (common for free-motion sewing), raise them back up using your machine’s feed dog control.

2. Clean the Feed Dogs Area

Lint and debris can gum up the works.

  • Use a small brush or compressed air to clean around the feed dogs.
  • Remove any lint, threads, or bits of fabric that could block their movement.

3. Inspect the Presser Foot

Is it holding your fabric down?

  • The presser foot needs to be down while sewing to keep the fabric steady.
  • If it’s up, the feed dogs won’t grip, and the fabric won’t move.

4. Check the Needle

A faulty needle can cause feeding problems.

  • Make sure the needle isn’t bent, dull or damaged.
  • Replace it if needed and insert it properly with the flat side facing the correct direction.

5. Adjust the Presser Foot Pressure

Is the pressure right?

  • Some machines let you adjust the presser foot pressure.
  • If your fabric is slipping, increase the pressure slightly to improve grip.

6. Check the Stitch Length

Tiny stitches can slow feeding.

  • Set your stitch length to about 2.5 mm (medium length).
  • Test on scrap fabric to make sure stitches are forming and feeding properly.

7. Make Sure Your Machine is Maintained

Smooth internal parts mean smooth feeding.

  • Regular oiling keeps the machine running freely.
  • Check your manual for oiling instructions, as not all machines require this.
  • Keep up with routine servicing; yearly is a good benchmark.

8. Consider Your Fabric Type

Not all fabrics behave the same.

  • Thick fabrics like denim or leather may need a heavy-duty needle and special presser foot.
  • Make sure your machine settings and accessories match your fabric.

Final Step: Test on Scrap Fabric

Before starting your real project:

  • Sew a few lines on scrap fabric.
  • Confirm the fabric feeds consistently and stitches look good.

By following these steps, you’ll solve fabric feeding issues quickly and get back to smooth sewing without the frustration.
