Bobbin thread not being picked upUpdated a month ago

When your machine refuses to pick up the bobbin thread, it can bring your sewing to a sudden stop. The good news? It’s often a simple fix. Let’s walk through the steps to troubleshoot and solve the problem, so you can get back to sewing with ease.

1. Re-Thread the Machine from Scratch

Incorrect threading is one of the most common causes of thread pickup issues.

  • Unthread both the top thread and bobbin.
  • Raise the presser foot before rethreading the upper thread; this opens the tension discs and ensures proper placement.
  • Follow your machine’s threading guide carefully for both threads.

This alone often resolves the issue.

2. Check the Bobbin Orientation

If the bobbin is inserted the wrong way, the upper thread can’t catch it.

  • Make sure the bobbin is inserted in the correct direction, check your manual (some machines require clockwise, others counterclockwise).
  • Confirm that the thread is pulled through the bobbin tension slot and that the bobbin is seated flat in its case.
  • Check that it is the correct size and style of bobbin for your machine

Even a tiny misalignment can cause problems.

3. Clean Out Lint and Debris

Dust and thread bits can block proper thread pickup.

  • Open the bobbin case area and use a small brush to remove any lint, fabric bits or thread clumps.
  • Clean around the feed dogs and bobbin hook area as well.

A clean machine is a happy machine.

4. Check the Needle

Your needle might be the hidden culprit.

  • Ensure it’s inserted fully with the flat side facing the correct direction (usually toward the back).
  • Replace it if it’s bent, dull, or damaged; a compromised needle can miss the bobbin loop entirely.

A fresh needle can make a big difference.

5. Adjust Thread Tension

Tension matters, especially when stitches aren’t forming properly.

  • Start by slightly adjusting the upper thread tension.
  • If your machine allows, check that the bobbin tension is not too tight or too loose, always adjust bobbin tension as a last resort and refer to your manual.

Tension should be balanced, not too tight, not too loose.

6. Manually Lift the Bobbin Thread

Try this trick to manually bring up the bobbin thread.

  • Turn the handwheel towards you to lower and raise the needle once.
  • Hold the top thread and gently pull; this should bring up the bobbin thread loop.
  • Use tweezers to pull the loop all the way up through the needle plate.

This step often resets the stitching connection.

7. Check Timing (If All Else Fails)

If nothing else works, the timing between the needle and bobbin hook could be off. The hook grabs the bobbin thread as the needle rises; if the timing is off, it won’t catch. This can happen with wear and tear or after a jam. A technician can adjust the timing if needed.

Final Step: Test Before You Sew

Always test before diving back into your project.

  • Sew a few lines on scrap fabric similar to your project material.
  • Make sure the bobbin thread is being pulled up consistently and stitches are forming properly.

Better to catch issues on a scrap than on your real project!

By working through these steps methodically, you can solve the bobbin pickup issue and keep your stitching on track.
